Have you ever had a stretch where you lost your intensity, and just don't care anymore?
I'm there now.
I hit a big bench March 24th, and since then - just don't have the drive anymore. I suspect its more normal than I realize. I'm hoping taking a month off and maybe setting new goals will help.
I need to get my intensity back before my training partners start questioning WTF I'm doing.

I think that's common. Sometimes it's overtraining. Sometimes you just need a break to get your batteries recharged. A break will do you good. You'll probably come back stronger than ever!

Joe, I completely understand. I kinda have a long explaination for my answer(please hang with me here).
I think that there are three different kinds of lifters in this world:
an ANIMAL - someone who uses brute strength and intensity to get through lifts and training cycles.
a MACHINE - someone who finds a way that is successful and performs it the same way everytime.
a TECHNICIAN - someone who relies on their technique to get them through a training cycle or an individual lift.
sometimes when you are an animal type of lifter and you lose your intensity, you lose your drive. If you are a technician or a machine type of lifter it doesnt effect you as much.
my suggestion is to try a different way of training. there are many successful ways of training out there.

Priest, I like that explaination. I think you might be right. Joe, will be fine. His intensity comes and goes like the wind. I still look for a #650 bench out of hte old man.

"Old man"? Chip, Joe's a just a young whippersnapper! Now you're making ME feel old at 58...although I AM a youthful-looking, vigorous fellow! <g>

Thanks guys.
I think part of my problem is the let down from hitting an old goal - took long enough. That - and not having a real direction for a future goal.
Taking some time off is helping. I just need to document a new goal, develop the plan, and work it.

I have found that it is better to have 2 sets of goals at the same time. A short term set of goals (what I will do this week) and a long term goal (what I will bench at the meet). This way you are able to see that you are making progress and stay motivated to making the end goal! You made the last one - you will make the next one!!

no goals? gotta have goals, brother. OK Here is the goal. Loose 20 lbs, and still get a 600 bench. More specifically - Bench 600lbs or more at 230lbs body weight by the time I turn 53.Is that good enough? Maybe even do it in an APF-California meet. LOL!

that is a great goal!!!!!!! is it realistic? cuz that is some great benchin. I think it is realistic. I hit 601 at about 255bw a few months ago - I had maybe 5 more pounds in me <g>. I think if I train hard, I can do it. I DEFINATELY have the fat to loose, If I do it right - I should be OK.... ...oh, and if I can get a shirt to fit right at the new weight.

Inzer RageX - what is better?
I have a few 51s, one looser than the other. I have a 50 - too tight for my current BW, might be just right if drop 20.
I still look back to the day when Chip first got me switched to a shirt - a single fury. I whinned about the pain. THAT WAS NOTHING compared to the pain Chip puts me thru these days.
My best raw bench is 405 - so getting about 200 out of the shirt.
Purists out there - sue me. I'm trying to maximize my bench based on the rules.

Joe you are in the right shirt! I can help you drasticly with the diet get my e-mail from Chip and I will forward you the diet I followed when I dropped to 220 from 250. During the whole training cycle I felt more energetic than ever. You can loose weight and maintain intensity and increase strength regaurdless of your age!
