Last night (September 5), at the Sports Science aircraft hanger for Fox Sports, Mendy hit a world record 1,008 pounds at 308 bodyweight. Breaking in a new shirt, an Inzer Phenom that he received that morning, he did an 850 warm-up that didn't touch, then went to 1,003 pounds struggling to touch. He dumped it. He then went for a 1,008-pound bench press where he struggled to touch but finally did. He easily blasted it to lockout.
Fox Sports has not yet released the video due to the fact that the show will not be televised until March, 2009. But we are working on the video release of the bench press itself. Scot looked like there was MUCH more in the tank. As Scot looked up he said, "One record down, one to go!" This is a 23-pound increase over the official record set by Ryan Kennelly just a few weeks ago.

Oh MY GOD!! Well was this any sort of sanctioned lift or was it just a taped gym lift? The fact that they talked about attempts like that makes it seem as though it was some sort of a competition but they did refer to Kennelly's 984 as the "Official" record. Either way, hats off to Mendy. I knew he could do it.

Chris, this was done for a TV show called "Sports Science" that airs on FSN. They get scientists to break down and analyze how world class athletes do what they do. They add in computer graphics and you can get a better understanding how a curve ball breaks, how a sprinter can run so fast in the 100, etc. Have you seen "Fight Science" on Nat Geo (I think)? Same concept. For more about the show, follow this link... msn.foxsports.com/sportscienceMendy's next scheduled meet is the Olympia in three weeks.

That's terrific Scot! Hope you can duplicate it at the WPC Worlds in a few weeks. Good luck!
